Listen, learn, repeat.

This is how I approach life.

Basically, it means I fail a lot.

If you’re human, you know what I’m talking about.

I embrace failure because it has the power to make me a better husband, father, and leader.

I’ve found the balance between growth and failure by listening to the people around me.

Unlike hearing, listening requires reflection.

I keep a “working journal” to help me reflect and learn from my mistakes.

Debriefing is a tactical approach that military leaders, coaches, and executives use for continuous improvement. So I do too.

This isn’t a place for my thoughts or feelings. It’s my strategic playbook.

I started this reflective practice over a decade ago to better understand the role my strengths and weaknesses play in my outcomes.

This iterative approach to journaling has helped me develop better habits relationships, personal goals, and self awareness.

As a follower of Jesus, it’s important that every aspect of my formation honors God.

So I’ve aligned Biblical principles with leadership lessons I’ve gleaned from my years as an entrepreneur to help me be a better leader at work and home.

I call this the Honors Journal and I’m currently leading a dozen other guys who want to live and lead like Jesus through the process.

Failure is a part of life and it played a key role in the Bible’s greatest stories; think Jonah, Samson, King David, and Peter.

Don’t be afraid to fail; instead, embrace it.

And when you do, try to fail fast, fail forward, fail with purpose, and press on!

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

Strategy is not a lengthy action plan. It is the evolution of a central idea through continually changing circumstances. - Jack Welch

Never let success get to your head; never let failure get to your heart.

- Ziad Abdelnour

A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them. - John C. Maxwell

Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.

- Arianna Huffington
